Founded Keep NC Beautiful was founded in 1985. Purpose To represent the interests of the state affiliates with Keep America Beautiful, support affiliates in promoting educational and volunteer programs locally and provide financial assistance to enhance affiliates impact on the cleanliness and beautification of local environments. Mission To develop partnerships that engage and empower organizations and individuals to take greater responsibility to keep North Carolina beautiful. Signature Initiatives
Affiliate Information Keep North Carolina Beautiful (KNCB) supports a network of certified local affiliates, accounting for more than four million residents. The following counties are part of the KNCB network – Ashe, Bladen, Brunswick, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Craven, Cumberland, Davie, Davidson, Duplin, Durham, Forsyth, Franklin, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Moore, Nash/Edgecombe, New Hanover, Onslow, Pasquotank, Pitt, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Scotland, Wake, Wilkes and Wilson. Cost/Benefit Ratio & Measurable Results The average NC affiliate produces $10-12 of benefits for every $1 of public funds invested in the KAB program. Surrounding property values increase by an average of 10% when a vacant lot is reclaimed with a garden. Crime is reduced by 50% in areas around buildings surrounded by trees and shrubs, compared to areas with no vegetation. KNCB adheres to strict guidelines enforced by KAB which require annual reporting of litter clean-ups/amount of litter picked up, documentation of volunteer hours, a litter index and cost/benefit analysis. Funding Needs Most KNCB affiliates are housed in city and county governments and operate on budgets of less than $5,000. With cutbacks in government spending, affiliates are in greater need than ever for supplemental funds. Affiliation with Keep America Beautiful KNCB is a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s largest volunteer-based community improvement/education organization with a network of 1,000 affiliate and participating organizations.
