Fairy Garden Beautification and Restoration Project

The Fairy Garden Beautification and Restoration Project will be installed in a quiet corner of the Poe Center's PlayWELL Park. The project will help mitigate runoff and soil loss while simultaneously attracting visitors to a display of whimsical plants and creatures. Strategic stonework will level portions of this space to slow water and hold soil. All beds will be prepared with a mixture of topsoil, soil conditioner, compost, and mulch for plant establishment.

Plants of various sizes, textures, and sustainability attributes will be planted to stabilize the soil and build microbial health. For example, larger shrubs such as lemon cypress trees and rainbow ascot euphorbia will provide substantial soil stabilization through strong roots. Groundcovers including ajuga and lamium will display a gentler approach to blanketing the soil with life. Medium-height plants such as brunnera and sedums will fill the intermediate niche both functionally and aesthetically.

Artistic small homes, creatures, and fairy garden accessories will be secured in and amongst the plants to create a whimsical effect. Our intention is to draw our youngest visitors to slow down, look closely, be curious, and experience the therapeutic effects of nature. This encourages social-emotional learning, stress management, and positive coping skills. We hope to demonstrate that plants, creatures, and people, even those that are small, can make a difference in restoring the earth.
