Project: Roots of Resilience

Project Application/Summary

The Roots of Resilience Garden Grant Extension seeks to build upon the invaluable experiences and lessons learned in 2024, our inaugural year. Our garden project has blossomed into more than just a physical space; it has become a sanctuary for our students, a place where they can explore their emotions, connect with nature, and find solace amidst the challenges they face. Last year, we witnessed over 380 students engaging in the creation of pavers, planting diverse flora, and painting rocks with encouraging messages, each contributing to a vibrant tapestry that reflects their individuality and creativity and the diversity of our school.

The impact of our garden has rippled through our Title I school, demonstrating the profound connection between nature and social-emotional growth. I observed firsthand how students walked through the garden with counselors, using the space as a tool for self-regulation and reflection. Staff members found joy in the tranquility of the garden, often sharing lunch there during the spring, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. The laughter, conversations, and quiet moments of contemplation have enriched our school culture, reminding us of the importance of nurturing both the mind and the heart.

This year, we aspire to enhance this experience by expanding our garden in meaningful ways. I plan to deepen our paver pathways using 2x4s, weed barriers, sand, and various grades of gravel, creating a durable, accessible pathway that spans approximately 100 feet. This will allow better upkeep for our custodian to leaf blow the area- as during the winter months it is totally overrun with dead leaves. This improvement will also allow students and staff to navigate the garden with ease, ensuring that everyone can partake in its benefits.

Additionally, we aim to introduce a variety of vegetables into our garden. By purchasing seeds and plants, students will engage in the entire planting and harvesting process. This hands-on experience will not only teach them about nutrition and responsibility but will also instill a sense of pride and accomplishment as they witness the fruits of their labor. We envision students gathering around the vegetable plots, sharing stories, and learning from one another, fostering bonds that extend beyond the garden.

To further enhance our garden's inviting atmosphere, we plan to add a few more benches strategically placed throughout the space. These benches will serve as gathering spots for students to reflect, collaborate, and connect. Whether they are deep in conversation or enjoying a moment of quiet contemplation, these seating areas will encourage social interaction and build a sense of belonging among students.

The exciting part of this extension is the inclusion of a new program at our school this year: the EBS/AU class, which serves students with Autism and other developmental disabilities. Conveniently located just outside their classroom, the Roots of Resilience Garden has captured the attention of these students, especially as they’ve noticed the vibrant cucumbers and berries growing during the warmer fall months. In partnership with the Best Buddies Program, each student in the EBS/AU class has been paired with a 5th-grade buddy, creating an inclusive environment where friendships can flourish. Together, they will participate in the extension project by engaging in gardening activities such as planting new crops and painting benches. We expect this collaboration to significantly enhance social connections, promote understanding, and foster a sense of community among all students, creating a positive impact that extends beyond the garden itself.
